Big Browns in the Oak Orchard

With the migratory salmon run on Lake Ontario nearing its end, the real fun begins. Big Browns and acrobatic steelhead are starting to make their way into the tributaries in more consistant numbers. Reports have not been as good in the eastern Lake Ontario tributaries compared to the great reports coming in from western New York and the Oak Orchard area.

The Salmon River in Pulaski, NY has had lower fish counts this year with a few browns and steelies being reported in the river at this time. Kings are still around but not in big numbers.

The Oak Orchard River has been seeing a good number of big Brown trout recently. A few fresh salmon are still arriving but not nearly the numbers they had a few weeks back. There are also a few steelhead being caught. During the upcoming weeks, expect the crowds to thin out with the salmon run coming to an end and the Brown trout fishing to get better by the week.

This photo is of a beautiful male brown trout caught on October 15th, 2000 by R. "Chad" Chorney from Rochester, NY. Chad caught this hog while fishing the "Oak", on a #12 yellow estaz egg pattern. The fish was released immediately after the photo was taken.
